Royal Cinque Ports Golf Club, Open Championship links course and the home of the Halford Hewitt, is the venue for the annual pilgrimage of OM golfers for their Autumn Meeting; it is normally held on the second weekend of September and in 2010 it will be Friday 9th-Sunday 11th.
Some members arrive on Friday afternoon for a practice round, then in the evening there is dinner at the club; Saturday is the main competition day and some mmebers just come for that (18 holes of foursomes in the morning for the Members of Parliament cup with stableford singles after lunch for the Northern Cup and an additional trophy (Vero Cup) for the best scratch score. Saturday night is Prizegiving and sees us dine at the Royal Hotel on the front at Deal just 5 minutes from the course. The whole weekend including accommodation (single/twin/triple) is arranged by member of the OMs golf committee and we have a Captain's Fund to assist the younger members with the cost of the weekend.
On Sunday morning there is golf for all who wish to stay, including a match against the club followed by lunch with the losers buying the wine.
In recent years we have averaged 20 golfers with the usual mixture of ages and handicaps although we would like to see more OMs who have recently left school.
This year the Members of Parliament Cup was won by Jeremy Galloway and Peter Tafler, the Northern Cup by Isaac Nyamekye and the Vero trophy by Frank Ward. The weather was superb, the course in pristine condition and the company excellent.
We would welcome new members and would like to see the return of others.
