Golfing Society Dinner 2008

The Centenary Year of the Old Millhillians Golfing Society ended with a prestigious dinner in the Long Room at Lords cricket ground in December 2008, and attended by 136 members of the Society and guests from a wide range of golf, including representatives from the  Royal & Ancient,  from the Halford Hewitt, from the Mellin & Senior Mellin, and other Old Boys Golfing society. Tim John was inducted as the Captain. The large screens at Lords flashed out in the night sky a message of congratulations. The dinner was a huge success.

In April our opponents in the Halford Hewitt were the Watsons who, as Colin Nunn our secretary said, was pairing “David and Goliath”. The match was actually closer than we anticipated and we lost 4-1 and would have lost only 3-2 but for a long difficult missed putt on the 18th.

Our spring meeting was held at Huntercombe in Oxfordshire with 31 playing.  David Harrison won the Marnham with 42 points, his best gross score ever.   Then in the foursomes in the afternoon the Kentish Cup was won by Anthony Ward and Nigel Maile with 32 points. The next few Club matches that followed were rather less fun as we lost against the Masters, the School, Old Oundelians, Haberdashers and Lyonians.  So victory was sweet when your Captain eventually  led the side against the OMTs at Moor Park to win 3-2.

The society remains in good heart, with an impressive calendar of well-supported matches taking place on courses as far removed as Royal Lytham to Deal, where we have the annual autumn meeting. We are also hoping recent leavers from the School will raise the standard of our scratch team.

Finally, congratulations to Colin Nunn on his appointment to the Committee of the Halford Hewitt – a singular honour.
