If you are not able to attend, please email me back in this regard at so I don’t need to keep chasing you!

City Drinks

Informal drinks held on the 1st Wednesday of every month at Greens Restaurant and Oyster Bar, 14 Cornhill, London EC3 from 6pm, open to all OMs working in finance. Organised by Solon Satanas.

March 2011

The first Wednesday of the month meant it was the occasion of the now regular OMs City drinks held at Greens Cornhill. Solon Satanas did his usual excellent job of leading from the front and arriving an hour or so in advance ( working hard from his Blackberry of course ). People joined over a period of time as they managed to break away from the dealing desk or latest IPO discussion. There was a total of 19 with vintages ranging from 1970 ( a truly great year) to 2006  and networking commenced across a range of impressive Houses. The careers forum at MHS on 17th March is focusing on finance and banking – so what  better addition for the event than Jeremy Bohn who runs an executive recruitment agency for this arena. There is something of an interesting crossover with the property boys eg. Jonathan Cooper of Even Group. OMs are very prominent in this arena and superb to have the connexion. Great to have the Club Chairman Andy Mortimer and some of the MHS staff – Paul Bickerdike and Tim Corbett (Hon Sec of the OMC) and also Nick Priestnall who does an excellent job of focusing the attention/resources of OMs in the direction of the MHS Foundation.  A hard core later adjourned to the Gaucho Grill then sharing a taxi to north London at midnight.

( Solon – you did well !) The creativity and achievements of OM’s is infinitely greater than generally realised and the liaison in the City ( as defined by activity, stretching from Knightsbridge via  Mayfair / St. James’s to Docklands)  is  going from strength to strength.  So if you are an OM and an upright, honest, caring  ‘banker’ (some mistake ? ed) and  mentally and physically well coordinated ie capable of deal making, talking and drinking then try to tear yourself away from the desk and pitch up !

City Dinner 2010

Last year two OMs Solon Satanas (Murray '93) and Alistair Marsella (Ridgeway '70) thought it would be a good idea to organise a dinner for OMs working within banking and the wider financial community.  They called this event the 'City Dinner'. It was a brilliant success with OMs at the start of their career socialising and networking with OMs who had worked in the City for many years. Due to the success of last year's dinner, they have organised another City Dinner and we hope many of you will attend and get together with othe rlike minded OMs in an informal atmosphere.

City Dinner

There are a significant  number of Old Millhillians dinners that are well established; so is there a place for  another dinner? Well, the City dinner evolved rather than being planned by a marketing department and eventually it was suggested organising a ‘pie and mash’ at a private room in a pub within the Square Mile:  The Counting House, Cornhill was chosen.  The appellation, ‘The City, was interpreted as descriptive of the type of activity as opposed to strictly geographical.  Two dozen attended with  an excellent spread of ages, including leavers from 1957 through to 2004. The food and wine were thoroughly up to par and contacts were made or refreshed  in  thoroughly convivial surroundings.

Liveryman’s Luncheon 6th May, Guildhall, London

The Liverymen’s annual lunch was held at Guildhall on 6th May with 27 attendees and our Club President, Alan Toulson, was guest of honour. We were entertained to three excellent speeches and many thanks again to Archie Galloway for his organisation.

Property Dinner 2009

This was an excellent occasion with over 60 people attending, and most importantly a wide range of ages, with a number of younger members enjoying their first OM event.

The Cavalry and Guards Club provided a stylish venue with good food and wines. The Headmaster was Guest of Honour with Stuart Hibberdine in the Chair. A superbly organised event by Mike Peskin.

Engineers & Scientists Dinner 2009

The Engineers’ & Scientists Dinner was held at the St Ermin’s Hotel in London on 22nd April and 26 OMs and guests attended a very pleasant, sociable evening along with an excellent meal. For the first time we extended the invitation to all OMs who have a career, academic or other interest or connection with science as well as engineering to better reflect the modern development and application of technology.

We were delighted to be joined by the President Alan Toulson, and by Deputy Head Andrew Gaylor (who gave us an interesting update on the School’s developments and activities) Harry Barnes, Head of Design and Technology at School, three pupils with interests in Technology, and Professor Mike Proctor, Chair of the Court of Governors and himself a distinguished science/mathematics don at Cambridge.

This was the first dinner under “new management”; David Rodda, received a vote of thanks from all those present for having organised the dinner so successfully for so many years. In 2010 the dinner will be on Friday 21st May and will be held at the School where we shall have the opportunity to visit the latest science & technology facilities and see some of the students’ work.

This year’s Engineers Dinner was held in the Jolly St. Ermin’s Hotel, Caxton Street, St James’s Westminster. This is a fine hotel well-known to older Engineers who worked in Victoria Street, at one time the home of the many consulting engineering practices who had offices there. The twenty-one attending foregathered in the Caxton Bar for a ‘meet and greet’ with the guests who included the Headmaster, Dr Dominic Luckett, Harry Barnes, the School’s Head of Design Technology, two 6th formers intending to follow an engineering career and Ronny Cohn the Club’s President. An enjoyable Dinner followed in the Marlborough Room.

The Headmaster spoke and highlighted school achievements and gave a toast to the Club. This was followed by the Club President who described his activities so far and who gave a toast to the School. Harry Barnes ended with a presentation to David Rodda of a special cubic model made by a new laser cutting tool recently acquired by the School and a short but impressive Power Point display of some of the items built by pupils studying Design Technology. During the evening David announced that he was standing down as the Dinner organiser and was pleased to announce that Dr Gordon Mizner had agreed to take over the duties.

Property Dinner 2007

The OM’s Property Annual Dinner held at the Cavalry and Guards Club, London on the 28th March 2007, heralded a record turn out, largely due to the auspicious occasion of having present both Graham Chase, the President of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (and of course a notoriously committed OM) and William Winfield, in one of his last formal addresses to OM’s as Headmaster of the School.

Not restricted to surveyors, the attendees included agents, investors, developers, architects, contractors, project managers, property lawyers and finance brains as well. William updated the room on the latest developments and achievements of the School, as well as an element of history from Graham Chase’s school days. It’s safe to say that Sport and Choir dominated his time at Mill Hill. Graham then responded with a fascinating review of a year in the life of the President of the RICS. Our thanks to Stuart Hibberdine for once again hosting the event and arranging a fine menu (and port).

Engineers Dinner 2007

A group of some 35 Old Millhillian Engineers and their guests – William and Margaret Winfield, Harry Barnes, 2 sixth-formers planning to study engineering and Geoffrey Vero (OMC President) - gathered for a reception on the 4th May in the newly-opened Favell building. Tours were made of the excellent facilities now available to the School. Many mused over the days when the area had been sports changing rooms and an indoor swimming pool amongst other facilities. The party later retired to Café 6 for Dinner.

David Rodda took the chair for the occasion and presented William with a special limited edition of a book about Brunel, the famous engineer whose birth Bicentenary had been celebrated in 2006. A list of the signatures of those present was given with the book and William thanked David warmly for the book. Geoffrey then spoke of his term as President and ended with a toast to the School; this was followed by William who spoke with strong affection of his time at Mill Hill and commended the new appeal to all present.

This was followed by Harry Barnes who described how he had been motivated to become an engineer and invited Alex Louden and Alex Stavrou, the two sixth-formers, to describe their motivation to become engineers. Their thoughts were well received by those present. Harry then made a toast to the Club. This marked the end of the evening and by popular vote was much enjoyed by all.

The attendees were: Geoffrey Vero, David and Marjorie Rodda, William and Margaret Winfield, Ronnie and Joan Aye Maung, R Amnunugama and Ms. V Jones, Roger Gardner, Stephanie Gibbons, Ray and Dorothy Hubbard, A Louden, Kurt Metzer, Ian Jarvis, G. Mizner, D Pike and Ms M Hyland, Graeme and Leslie Roberts, A Stavrou, A Woollaston, D Harrison, R and P Hudgell, John and Edwina King, Clive and Mrs. E Mence, Mark Morter, Mike Norris, Tim Poole, B Woolf.

Property Dinner 2006

The annual property dinner took place on 8 March 2006 at The Cavalry & Guards Club and was attended by 55 Old Millhillians, including The Headmaster and The President of The Old Millhillians Club, John Elliott MBE.

Stuart Hibberdine took the Chair and Graham Chase, who is to be President of The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors in 2006/07, proposed the Health of The School coupled with the name of The Headmaster, to which The Headmaster gave a fascinating reply incorporating news of the events which might take place during the bi-centenary year and the progression of the School over the past twelve months.

Both Graham Chase and Stuart Hibberdine would be interested to receive details of anyone who is not already on the mailing list. Please contact Graham Chase at graham.chase@chaseandpartners.co.uk or Stuart Hibberdine at Hibb@btinternet.com

The dinner next year will be held in honour of both the Headmaster, prior to his retirement and Graham Chase, as President of The RICS, at The Cavalry & Guards Club on Wednesday 7 March 2007. Please note the date in your diary.

Engineers Dinner 2006

Calling all Millhillian Engineers! The Annual Dinner for 2006 was held in the Jolly Hotel St Ermin’s situated in Caxton Street just round the corner from St James’s Park Metro station. It was held on Friday 12th May and started at 7pm in the Hotel Caxton Bar.

This was an opportunity to get together and exchange views on careers and the school. All Millhillians either qualified in one of the several engineering institutions or were involved in activities linked to engineering in the UK or overseas e g road and air transportation, water engineering and management, coastal defence, computer modelling, equipment manufacture or marketing, structural design.

The arrangements are already underway for The Engineers Dinner 2007. We are discussing holding the dinner at the School itself.....

Please contact the Club office or David Rodda on his mobile phone 07908 270 461 for details. Those already known to David or who have attended previous dinners will receive the notice about arrangements in due course.
